Trace an email from Received headers

Paste email headers to see each Received hop, the sending host, and how long the message sat between servers. Nothing is uploaded.

Paste headers that include Received: lines. The path is built in this tab from oldest hop to newest.

How it works

Every mail server that accepted the message prepends a Received line. Newest hop is first.

  1. Step 1

    Paste headers

Use “show original” or the top of an .eml file. Body text is ignored.

  2. Step 2

    Read the path

Hops are listed from origin to inbox, with from/by hosts, IP, protocol and timestamp.

  3. Step 3

    Check delays

Time between hops is shown when both dates parse. Large gaps often mean greylisting or a queue.

Received path FAQ

Is this a full forensic report?

No. It only reads Received headers in this tab. It does not look up DNS or blacklists — use the email DNS tool for that.

Why is the first hop last in the email?

SMTP prepends each new Received line, so the inbox server is at the top and the origin is at the bottom.

Are dates always accurate?

Only if the servers set a correct timestamp. Clock skew can produce negative delays.
